TASK FORCE – “OPERATION FEED THE NEED” FOR THE LARGEST THANKSGIVING DINNER FEEDING IN THE STATE OF ALABAMA
Birmingham, AL – October 31, 2011—Daniel Cason’s Ministries is gearing up for their annual I Cared Enough Community Event, serving Thanksgiving Dinner and supporting thousands with donations on November 22, 2011 at the Fair Park Arena, 2331 Bessemer Road, Birmingham, AL 35208.
The partnership between the non-profit community based ministry, the City of Birmingham and numerous socially conscience organizations need your support. We are looking for volunteers and additional donations to support which may potentially be our largest event to date. Last year we feed approximately 5,000 individuals and families, unfortunately with the economic instability of families and communities the need is even greater this year than in previous years. More people are out of work, living paycheck to paycheck, entire families are homeless and just need your support. Now is the time!!
We are looking to provide every family a turkey or chicken, additional food/grocery items for their own Thanksgiving dinner and clothing for all ages and all sizes will be available. In addition, gift cards are appreciated to fill additional needs. More importantly, we need YOU! Your time, your hands, your volunteerism can make the difference in our efforts and in the lives of others.
Calling all church ministries, college students, businesses, government officials, volunteer groups, individuals, families and everyone who has the time and those who can make the time, no matter how much you can offer, be a blessing and receive the blessing of “thanks” in return. Please attend a meeting beginning November 1, 2011 through November 15, 2011 at Kids Center, 538 7th Street No., Birmingham, AL 35203 or you may call 205.320.2111 for registration and additional information of how you can be part of the largest community feeding in all of Alabama.

The Magic City Classic … very good for Birmingham

Magic City Classic events started as early as Monday with private events, public sets at area bars and house parties. As the week matured the crowds got larger as the fans trickled into the city. Fast forward to Thursday when the most noticeable numbers of Magic City Classic fans began to find their way around the city. Iva & Kolby’s kick off event Welcome to Birmingham and the Old School Classic Party with Chubb Rock and Slick Rick seemed to be the places to be on Thursday night.
As Friday rolled in, it was obvious that the Classic was upon us. The tailgating around Legion Field was amazing. Friday morning the Tom Joyner Morning Show aired live from the stadium with live entertainment and giveaways. On deck with the Tom Joyner crew were local personalities Isis Jones, Chris Coleman and Darryl Johnson. Special guest included Noel Gourdin, Ruben Studdard, Just A Few Cats and Comedian George Wallace.
Friday afternoon I dropped by the I Am The Classic Empowerment Expo at the BJCC. The event was well planned and organized. It seems like a great idea for job seekers as plenty of hiring companies where onsite. There were also plenty of seminars on topics that are important to the African American community. We hope to see this event return next year as it continues to grow.
Friday evening The Magic Foundation along with the city of Birmingham and local corporations hosted its annual Classic Soirée at the Birmingham Museum of Art. This year’s event included a live performance by national recording artist Raheem DeVaughn and celebrity DJ D-Nice. Other popular Friday Night events included ClassicFriday.com with Biz Markie, Crown Royal VIP event with Jermaine Dupri and the Triple Set Block Fest, which has become one of the most anticipated Classic Weekend events. Comedian George Wallace was at the Stardome Comedy Club and Rickey Smiley was live at the Alys Stephens Center.

Game Day was awesome as usual and the tailgating experience was top notch. I rode the shuttle in just so I can experience it first hand. I must admit the shuttle ride was smooth and easy and we were dropped off right at the field behind the Hot 107.7 Tailgating area where Tasha Simone, Sly King and Sir Laurence were at work giving away tickets to the Ledisi Concert. Of course the crowd was thick and I worked my way around to the Coors Light Tailgating Experience. Coors Light seems to really know how to tailgate. I guess being a sponsor of the NFL and many other large sporting events gives them a little leverage over everyone else. The Coors Light Tailgating experience comes complete with a large portable bar with flat panel televisions, grilled chicken and hot dogs, a DJ, a celebrity host, plus pretty women in referee uniforms serving food and drinks. I need to also mention Coors Light gave away an iPad and a X-Box along with other giveaways. During the game I ran into comedian Rickey Smiley and he shared a joke that George Wallace told at the Stardome Comedy Club the night before. Rickey let us know that he has dealt with alot of comedians and that George Wallace is one of the funniest men in comedy and I must admit the joke was pretty funny …. you had to be there.
Kick-off for the Magic City Classic was at 2:30 pm with the Battle of the Bands taking place at half-time. Actress/Model LisaRaye was honored during half-time and the game ended with a 20-19 win for Alabama A&M.
After the game there was a post game concert by Maze featuring Frankie Beverly. The end zone Cabana’s were magnificent and took the experience of the Magic City Classic to the next level. Post game parties included Encore V with actor Lance Gross and the First Friday Birmingham Classic Weekend After Party with actress LisaRaye.
After months of anticipation the 70th Annual Magic City Classic is behind us and the impact on Birmingham is certainly eye-opening. The Magic City Classic is a very good thing for Birmingham and I must commend the Bruno’s Event Team, the corporate sponsors, the promoters, the radio stations and our elected officials for assembling such a great weekend. The patrons must also be commended for being such great supporters of the Magic City Classic tradition.
There is no doubt in my mind that the city, its partners and the community has to leave a lasting impression on those that visit the city for the Magic City Classic. The 70th Annual Magic City Classic did just that so let’s get ready for the 71st!

THE KIRK FRANKLIN “FEARLESS” TOUR TAKES OVER BIRMINGHAM

Birmingham, AL–Our nephew, our friend, our favorite Gospel artist, Kirk Franklin, is going back out on the road with the “Fearless Tour” and he’s coming to Birmingham along with his newly signed label mates, Jason Nelson and Deon Kipping, and Sunday Best Winner Amber Bullock and long-time Gospel artist Isaac Carree.
The “Fearless Tour” pulls into Birmingham, Alabama on Wednesday, November 9, 2011 at 7pm at the historic Fair Park Arena. Tickets are on sale now at Fair Park and the Boutwell Auditorium Box Office with admission starting at $30.
The “Fearless Tour” will support Franklin’s chart topping, critically acclaimed project, Hello Fear, which has been at the top of the charts since its release in March of this year. Since the release of his self-titled debut in 1993, Franklin has proved himself a pioneer when he sprinkled a taste of hip-hop in the mix. He changed musical history with the release of his debut album, KIRK FRANKLIN AND THE FAMILY, the first gospel album to sell more than a million units.
In his bold attempt to broaden the range of the traditional gospel audience, Kirk Franklin was willing to take heat from the naysayers as long as it didn’t get in the way of delivering the inspired message. “After more than 16 years in this industry, I’ve learned so much,” Franklin, says. “I want to take those lessons, as well as my own experiences as a man who grew up with one foot in the church and one foot in the streets, and use that to connect with this generation,” he said.
To date, the musical trendsetter has garnered seven GRAMMY® Awards; an American Music Award; 35 Stellar Awards; 12 Dove Awards (CCM); five NAACP Awards; 2 BET Music Awards, a Soul Train Award and numerous others. Recently, Kirk Franklin resumed his role as host and co-executive producer for the third season of the BET original series, SUNDAY BEST. Fans were also recently treated to the release of Kirk Franklin’s book “The Blueprint: A Plan For Living Above Life’s Storms”. A devoted husband, Franklin and his wife Tammy have been happily married for 14 years and are proud parents of four children.

The Triple Set Block Fest returns this weekend to the Magic City.
Fever Birmingham created The Triple Set to bring a Bourbon Street style event to The Magic City Classic, while making it economically feasable for the community. Since it’s inaugural year of 2008, The Triple Set has made charitable contributions to The American Breast Cancer Foundation, The Magic City Harvest, and The Omicron Lambda Education Fund. Fox 6 news heralded The Triple Set as the reason fans of the classic are spending money downtown again. Each year this event grows in both size and popularity and has created an estimated economic impact of better than 350,000 to the City of Birmingham. Patrons of The Triple Set can expect to enjoy great music , food and drinks. The best way to describe The Triple Set is “flavor”.
