It was great to have the opportunity to sit down and talk with some very inspiring young men that call themselves Black ROC Investment Group. What really peeked my interest about this group is how they have taken a very simple idea that many people seem to miss. Power in numbers.
Black ROC is an investment group which consist of several African American men that have the vision of investing in minority businesses while Reaching Our Community (ROC). These guys are not from wall street or ivy league business schools. They are products of their communities. They are blue collar workers, family men and visionaries. The members of Black ROC Investment Group are coal miners that earn an honest living. They work together in a dangerous environment and make good money. Through their friendships at work they each saw a need to help small business owners and invest in their communities. This is what led them to come together outside of the coal mines and form Black ROC Investment Group.
I shared with the group the story about A.G. Gaston from the book Black Titan. Who just like these young men worked in the coal mines. A.G. Gaston’s business empire started out of the coal mines as he would loan money to his co-workers and later sell insurance to the same group. A.G. Gaston went on to become on of the wealthiest African American business men in the world. The future looks great for Black ROC.

The Black Treatment Advocates Network
Hosts Updates from the XIX International Conference
in Birmingham, AL
Local Leaders discuss ending the AIDS epidemic
Birmingham, AL September 6, 2012 — To bring information from the recent International AIDS Conference (AIDS2012) to Jefferson County, The Black Treatment Advocates Network (BTAN), and the Black AIDS Institute are sponsoring Post-Conference Updates in Birmingham on Sept. 6 and 7.
BTAN, a network of Black Advocates committed to bringing the latest HIV/AIDS science to Black communities, is hosting the Updates in partnership with AIDS Alabama, Alabama Educational Technology Conference, UAB 1917 Clinic, Aletheia House, and Birmingham AIDS Outreach, Building Bridges, Magnolia Medical Center, and National Quality Center. The theme of the Updates is “The Future of HIV Prevention from a Biomedical Perspective.”
The Updates will review the national prevention toolbox, focusing heavily on biomedical preventions and interventions. Major topics that will be discussed include treatment, prevention, developments in biomedical interventions, and the influence on STIs on HIV. This Hub is aimed for hard-to-reach populations such as women, men who have sex with men, and youth.
The Black Treatment Advocates Network (BTAN), was brought together as a part of a commitment by the Black AIDS Institute to help raise HIV science and literacy in the Black community. BTAN’s goals are to empower Black communities to strengthen their local healthcare infrastructure with the newest tools regarding testing and treatment options, as well as to provide information about new resources to support people living with HIV/AIDS and their loved ones.
BTAN delegate, Nigel Weatherspoon, Director of Education-AID Alabama, who attended AIDS2012 will present the latest scientific and behavioral research gathered from the Conference to those who could not attend; provide HIV testing, training and local project activities; and encourage new people to join the local network.
