About Mike Phillips
Mike began his musical odyssey at the age of five in his native Mt. Vernon, NY. After experimenting with an assortment of instruments including acoustic and electric bass, violin, piano, French horn and trumpet, he focused on the saxophone because it was the vehicle best suited to express his creative passion.
He diligently honed his talents throughout his formative years, painstakingly mastering the technical skills and self discipline required for the art form. More than that, Mike also developed a keen understanding of the unique and personal relationship between the musician and the audience.
In the summer of 1993, Mike made his presence felt on the music scene with his now legendary debut performance at the well-known New York City jazz & R&B spot, Wilson’s. Invited there by a friend who was playing keyboards with the house band, Mike literally walked on stage and, much to the surprise of the band leader, began to blow before anyone asked him to sit in. The looks of bewilderment quickly turned to smiles and the rest, as they say, is history.
Mike has been a regular there ever since, performing with such artists as Babyface, Rachelle Farrell, Brian McKnight, Boyz II Men and Prince. He has also showcased his extraordinary talent via performances throughout the US and abroad, touring with such notables as Teddy Riley & Blackstreet, Jonathan Butler, Simply Red, Wayman Tisdale, Kenny Lattimore and the incomparable Stevie Wonder.
In 1996, Mike was invited to perform at President Clinton’s Inaugural Gala held at The Kennedy Center in Washington, DC. Other milestone events include the 80th Birthday Celebration for President Nelson Mandela in South Africa, a Superbowl appearance with Wonder, and the Billboard Music Awards. Mike’s television credits include Saturday Night Live, The David Letterman Show, BET On Jazz, BET Sound Stage, and The Tonight Show.
Mike’s artistry exceeds category, as shown by his recording sessions with an assortment of diverse performers including the late rapper Notorious B.I.G., mega movie star and recording artist Will Smith, vocalist Mariah Carey, and the gospel ensemble Anointed. And his collaboration with Teddy Riley on the Rugrats The Movie soundtrack added yet another dimension to the phenomenal sound and career of Mike Phillips.
Driven to be the very best, Mike has resolved to follow in the path of his mentors, the legendary saxmen Dexter Gordon, John Coltrane and Charlie Parker, and take his genre to another level. This determination to develop his craft has helped him reconfigure the jazz landscape by infusing blues, gospel and hip-hop elements into a refreshingly unique style.
Interesting Fact: After meeting Michael Jordan, Mike Phillips became the only musician signed to the Jordan Brand.

The 6th Annual Preserve Jazz Festival – presented by Tom Williams Lexus – is pleased to announce this year’s headliner, the incomparable, KIRK WHALUM on his 2012 Romance Language Tour!
Soulful, passionate, stirring…these are the words most often used to describe Kirk’s music. Forged from his Memphis, (TN) gospel roots and his 1980‘s initiation into the thriving Houston, TX nightclub scene, Kirk’s big, rich tenor sound is unmistakably his. It was also in Houston where jazz pianist Bob James “discovered” him and brought him on tour, which led to five successful albums with Columbia Records, including Cache, Kirk’s first #1 album. After moving to Los Angeles, Kirk became an in demand session player for top artists like, Barbara Streisand, Al Jarreau, Luther Vandross, Larry Carlton, Quincy Jones and most notably, Whitney Houston. It’s his sax heard on her mega-hit, “I Will Always Love You.” Kirk soon followed that career high point with his phenomenal hit album released on Warner Bros. Records, For You, perhaps the most successful of over 25 solo recordings to date. Kirk is the recipient of numerous awards and acknowledgements for his musical excellence including three Dove Award nominations, an NAACP Image Award nomination and has won two Stellar Awards-Gospel music’s highest honor. An eleven time Grammy nominee, Kirk won his first Grammy award for Best Gospel Song (“It’s What I Do”-featuring Lalah Hathaway) alongside life-long friend and gifted writer, Jerry Peters. Kirk is currently touring in support of his new album, Romance Language and will be joined onstage by two amazing vocalists during a 90-minute set; his brother KEVIN WHALUM and the lovely and talented, NICOLE HENRY.
Rounding out this year’s stellar lineup, is co-headliner, ALEX BUGNON with very special guest, Birmingham’s own, ERIC ESSIX. Back by very popular demand, with his own band and a full 60-minute set, is sensational saxophonist, ERIC DARIUS; and kicking off this year’s festival is Birmingham jazz guitarist, KEITH WILLIAMS.
Since the inaugural year of the festival in 2007, attendees have asked for VIP ticketing options. As a result, organizers are introducing The Lexus Platinum VIP Package in 2012! Features include a premium seating area, onsite parking, access to food and beverages in the Lexus Lounge located in the Boot Restaurant at The Preserve, an exclusive “Artist Meet & Greet Hour” and much more! Details and tickets products are available now at www.preservejazz.com. Children 12 and under are admitted FREE.
Festival attendees will again “Park & Ride” from Regions Park (formerly the Hoover Met) on FREE shuttle buses that will provide transportation to and from the festival. Bus riders must be able to hold all bags, coolers, etc. with them on the bus ride. NO PARKING is allowed at the festival site!
One major change from the previous five jazz festivals is that the shuttle bus service from Regions Park will run every 15 minutes or when the buses are full.
Festival gates open to the general public at 3 pm, with performances starting at 4 pm.
2012 corporate partners include: Tom Williams Lexus, The City of Hoover, WVSU-FM 91.1, Essential Recordings, Buffalo Rock and Frito Lay, Alabama Power, Car Max, ABC 33/40, Renaissance Ross Bridge, USS Real Estate & Realty South.
