  2. Investing in Urban Entrepreneurs
  3. The Case for Urban Entrepreneurs

Speakers and panelists for this forum include:

  • Valerie Jarrett, Senior Advisor to the President, White House
  • Marie Johns, Deputy Administrator, U.S. Small Business Administration

BlackCareers.com list 7 gigs that make good second jobs

Times are tough and many of those that have a job could often use a second one simply to make ends meet.  Getting a second job could be more stress and strain than you want to deal with but BlackCareers.com has listed 7 opportunities that maybe a good fit for picking up some additional income without a lot of headaches.

And the top 7 are ….

  1. Bartending
  2. Freelance
  3. Cosmetic Laser Technician
  4. Child Care Provider
  5. Futures Trader
  6. Sales Consultant
  7. Mystery Shopper

Get the complete details here from BlackCareers.com

Speaking from experience I know bartending and other wait staff and service related jobs can be a good source of part-time income.  I can also vouch for freelance work. I have friends that would suggest opportunities in grooming if you have the credentials such as barbers, hair stylist and nail technicians.  I think another opportunity for this list would be lawn care and cleaning services for homes and buildings.   For those that have the educational requirements and don’t mind taking work from the second job home consider opportunities as an adjunct instructor or part-time professor at a local college.  These are opportunities you could do after you  get off your full time job or on the weekend.

In my opinion if you want, need or must have a second job it should be one that takes you away from the stress of your full-time job but not as demanding.  Try to find a part time job that allows you to escape from stress and not put too much thought into what you are doing.  Unfortunately these options may not the best paying jobs but it will keep you sane while giving you some extra cash.

The Shoppes at Fairfield Discount Mall

I really enjoy seeing opportunities for economic development come to areas that meant so much to me as a child.  Growing up in West End and having family in Bessemer meant I spent a lot of time in the Fairfield/Midfield areas.  Western Hills Mall, shopping with my mom, the hardware store with my Dad, family restaurant outings and several other places that come to mind played a large part of my childhood and teenage years.

Many of the popular anchor stores located in the mall and large store fronts are gone.  They have been replaced with small businesses that often times come and go or buildings that simply sit empty.  Thanks to an Atlanta business woman the building that was once a thriving large retailer in Flintridge Plaza is getting some new life.

The Fairfield Discount Mall,  a 60,000 square feet upscale indoor mini mall, will open up in the plaza and will consist of over 100 retail spaces. After a brief conversation with the owner it was obvious that she is not only passionate about the concept but also has plenty of experience  opening similar malls and convenience stores in communities that could use a boost.   The Fairfield Discount Mall will consist of  retail stores and services such as men and women clothing stores, music stores, shoe stores, accessories, cell phones, beauty supplies, barber and beauty salons, housewares, electronics, stereo stores, handbags, jewelry stores, specialty shops and many more.

The newly renovated permanent structure will give small business owners and retailers an opportunity to grow their business while banking on weekend foot traffic that will visit the mall to shop, socialize, eat and people watch.  Unlike many flea market experiences the vendors can rent their own secure space and lock their merchandise up meaning no more loading and unloading for the weekend.

The mall will also feature a kids zone, food court, Internet cafe, a convenience store and a meeting room making it more of a community resource.  The Fairfield Discount Mall will be open Thursday – Sunday with extended hours.  For more information on the Fairfield Discount Mall call (205) 259-6755 or email FairfieldDiscountMall@gmail.com.  You can also connect to the Fairfield Discount Mall on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100002881241263

The Fairfield Discount Mall is located at 6500 Aaron Aronnov Blvd in the Old Kmart Building in Flintridge Plaza – Fairfield, Alabama and is schedule to open just before Christmas on December 15, 2011

Vendor spaces with flexible leasing options available! For more information contact:
