THE SPOKEN WORLD PROJECT: AMSTERDAM is a film about the power of VOICE, LANGUAGE, MUSIC and the importance of the ORAL TRADITION.
THE VISION:
In June of 2011, My son Omari Jazz and myself, Sharrif Simmons, were awarded an artist residency through the Open Ateliers program in Amsterdam’s Zuidoost (Southeast) “Bijlemer” district. On our way over to Holland from the United States, we developed a curiousity about the changing ways people were using (or not using) their voices in society. We decided to explore this idea further. After meeting independent filmmaker Heike Tjepkema, also a resident of Amsterdam, we embarked on a quest to discover the different and unique ways people are using their individual; as well as their collective VOICES. THE SPOKEN WORLD PROJECT: AMSTERDAM is the result of our time spent with the OAZO Residency Program.
THE FILM:
This documentary asks the question: “HOW DO YOU USE YOUR VOICE?” In today’s technology driven society, dominated by social media, texting, Facebook, Twitter and non-verbal forms of communication, our traditional use of voice is rapidly changing. If we are not using our voices to socialize, educate and communicate, then what are we becoming? How do we preserve the Spoken World?
WE EXPLORE THIS QUESTION through interviews with actors, comedians, poets, artists, musicians, religious leaders, filmmakers, activists, vocal coaches and teachers. The documentary also follows our journey through the process. Capturing our difficult moments with no food or transportation and the help we received from friends and strangers. To date, our adventure has been a unique look into the current state of social evolution. Are we ready to live in a world without human voice? Are we evolving with the natural progress of science and technology? YOU DECIDE.
THE SOUNDTRACK:
Omari Jazz has become a prolific music producer at an early age. At 16 years old, he was the youngest artist to be offered an artist residency with the OAZO program in Amsterdam, Holland. While there, he performed on RED LIGHT RADIOhttp://www.redlightradio.net/shows/omari-jazz/omari-jazz-june-28th
OMARI’s vision for the soundtrack is a collaboration with his father, Spoken Word Poet Sharrif Simmons. Together they will provide an audio-scape for the documentary while exploring the use of voice, music and sound-design.

WHAT WE NEED:
A successful fundraising campaign for the SPOKEN WORLD PROJECT: AMSTERDAM will allow us to purchase the following:
- Transportation and Lodging for 2
- Sound equipment
- Digital camera
- Daily Per Diem (food expenses)
- Editing program
- Mastering for the soundtrack
Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
RISKS AND CHALLENGES:
Most of the challenges we face with this project exist in the distance between the film makers. Omari and I are based in Birmingham, Alabama (Roll tide!) and Heike Tjepkema is in Amsterdam, Holland. This has caused delays in our creative process. Ironically, we’ve used Skype, Facebook and Yahoo to keep in contact and continue the project.
We’ve managed to come this far and plan on forging through with whatever resources we have.
WHEN WE ARE FULLY FUNDED: We expect there to be some challenges getting the project into festivals and screenings. As independent film makers, we are prepared to ensure that all of our rewards are met and the film is seen by as many viewers as possible.

Meet Black ROC Investment Group

It was great to have the opportunity to sit down and talk with some very inspiring young men that call themselves Black ROC Investment Group. What really peeked my interest about this group is how they have taken a very simple idea that many people seem to miss. Power in numbers.
Black ROC is an investment group which consist of several African American men that have the vision of investing in minority businesses while Reaching Our Community (ROC). These guys are not from wall street or ivy league business schools. They are products of their communities. They are blue collar workers, family men and visionaries. The members of Black ROC Investment Group are coal miners that earn an honest living. They work together in a dangerous environment and make good money. Through their friendships at work they each saw a need to help small business owners and invest in their communities. This is what led them to come together outside of the coal mines and form Black ROC Investment Group.
I shared with the group the story about A.G. Gaston from the book Black Titan. Who just like these young men worked in the coal mines. A.G. Gaston’s business empire started out of the coal mines as he would loan money to his co-workers and later sell insurance to the same group. A.G. Gaston went on to become on of the wealthiest African American business men in the world. The future looks great for Black ROC.

BlackCareers.com list 7 gigs that make good second jobs
January 11, 2012 by Russ McClinton

Times are tough and many of those that have a job could often use a second one simply to make ends meet. Getting a second job could be more stress and strain than you want to deal with but BlackCareers.com has listed 7 opportunities that maybe a good fit for picking up some additional income without a lot of headaches.
And the top 7 are ….
- Bartending
- Freelance
- Cosmetic Laser Technician
- Child Care Provider
- Futures Trader
- Sales Consultant
- Mystery Shopper
Get the complete details here from BlackCareers.com
Speaking from experience I know bartending and other wait staff and service related jobs can be a good source of part-time income. I can also vouch for freelance work. I have friends that would suggest opportunities in grooming if you have the credentials such as barbers, hair stylist and nail technicians. I think another opportunity for this list would be lawn care and cleaning services for homes and buildings. For those that have the educational requirements and don’t mind taking work from the second job home consider opportunities as an adjunct instructor or part-time professor at a local college. These are opportunities you could do after you get off your full time job or on the weekend.
In my opinion if you want, need or must have a second job it should be one that takes you away from the stress of your full-time job but not as demanding. Try to find a part time job that allows you to escape from stress and not put too much thought into what you are doing. Unfortunately these options may not the best paying jobs but it will keep you sane while giving you some extra cash.
