The Triple Set, a Classic Weekend signature event

The Triple Set Block Fest returns this weekend to the Magic City.

Fever Birmingham created The Triple Set to bring a Bourbon Street style event to The Magic City Classic, while making it economically feasable for the community.  Since it’s inaugural year of 2008, The Triple Set has made charitable contributions to The American Breast Cancer Foundation, The Magic City Harvest, and The Omicron Lambda Education Fund.  Fox 6 news heralded The Triple Set as the reason fans of the classic are spending money downtown again.  Each  year this event grows in both size and popularity and has created an estimated economic impact of better than 350,000 to the City of Birmingham. Patrons of The Triple Set can expect to enjoy great  music , food and drinks.  The best way to describe The Triple Set is “flavor”.

Alys Stephens Center Homegrown Weekend!

UAB’s Alys Stephens Performing Arts Center Homegrown Weekend takes place October 27 – October 29, 2011.

The weekend kicks off with jazz great Eric Essix and Five Men on a Stool on Thursday – October 27 @ 7:30pm.

Friday, October 28, comedian Rickey Smiley comes back home with a few friends that will keep you laughing all night. Showtime is 8:00 pm.

Saturday and Sunday its Ovation a special engagement with the Alabama Ballet. Saturday there will be two shows one at 3pm and the second show at 8pm.  On Sunday showtime is 3pm.

LisaRaye to host the Classic Weekend After Party

Actress LisaRaye will host the First Fridays Classic Weekend After Party, Saturday, October 29, 2011 at the B&A Warehouse.

In addition to serving as the hostess for the Classic Weekend After Party Ms. LisaRaye McCoy is the 70th Annual Magic City Classic Game Day Ambassador and will be honored at half-time of the Magic City Classic.

Thursday, October 27

Thursday’s nights belong to Skool Daze and Birmingham’s Young Professionals in the Magic City.  Classic Thursday at Skool Daze will feature a Welcome to Birmingham Mixer that starts at 4pm and goes throughout the night with DJ C-DUBB in the mix. STEEL is located at 2300 1st and 23rd in Downtown Birmingham.

For those of you that crave live music The Bistro Room offers the best in Live Jazz and Classic Soul & R&B from Shaun Pezant, Norris Jones and Mike Ham every Thursday so you better believe Classic Weekend will be MAGICAL!  Offering a full menu with steaks, seafood, pasta, chicken and salads from the kitchen the Bistro Room is a must visit location. Now for you old schoolers Chubb Rock and Slick Rick take the stage at Old Car Heaven with radio personalities Chris Coleman and Lil Homie plus the lovely South Models will be in the house.  Slick Rick’s DJ, DJ Kaos will also be in the mix and if you have not heard this brother spin you have been  missing out.  Concert and After Party at the same location … you can’t beat that! Friday, October 28

Magic City Classic Eve is always a blast in Birmingham. You can find an event in every corner of the city and making a decision on where to go can be tough!  Here are a few Friday night suggestions you should consider.

Tom Joyner Morning Show returns this year to Legion Field.  Get up and get out to the field for some early morning fun.

Comedian George Wallace drops by the Stardome Comedy Club for two nights with two shows on Friday and three shows on Saturday night. Check out www.stardome.com for tickets and information.  The Stardome is located at 1818 Data Drive in Hoover, AL.  You can also catch comedian Rickey Smiley at the Alys Stephens Center.

The Triple Set Block Fest is one of the signature events for Classic Weekend.  TWO nights, FOUR events, ONE block all for ONE price with multiple DJs, bands and special invited guest. Now that’s a deal!  Triple Set is hosted by DJ Envy from MTV.  Participating venues include STEEL, The Wine Loft, The Parthenon and The Compound.

Other notable Friday night events include Classic Friday with Biz Markie at Rouge Tavern, Crown Royal presents DJ Jermain Dupree at the Merienda and the Omega Psi Phi blaQUE Out event.  Also check out popular spots like the Plum Bar, Platinum of Birmingham and the M Lounge.

Saturday, October 29

Of course this is game day and you must start off with the Magic City Classic Parade which begins at 8am in Downtown Birmingham. After the parade make your way over to Legion Field for the ultimate tailgating experience!  Last year Coors Light won the prize with a really cool tailgating experience which included hip-hop legend Dougie Fresh.  We assure you that Coors Light will do it just as big this year.  This will be the biggest party of the weekend!

All of the urban radio stations will be in the house holding mini concerts, contest and more until kick-off which will be around 2:30pm so make sure you have your game tickets — www.themagiccityclassic.com

Saturday night the Triple Set Block Fest continues and the second night of comedy from George Wallace at the Stardome Comedy Club which will feature three shows (7:30, 9:45 and Midnight).  The Steve Harvey Appreciation Tour, which is Steve Harvey’s final visit to Birmingham as a stand up comedian will take place at the BJCC.

Closing out Saturday Night is the Official Classic Weekend After Party hosted by LisaRaye! Classic Weekend Jazz Series with Top Secret and the Legendary Ona Watson

The Magic City Classic brings the “magic of jazz” which includes two legendary performances from the Top Secret Collective and Ona Watson.  On Friday, October 29, 2010 catch the Top Secret Collective as they come together for a special Classic Weekend performance.  On Friday, October 30, 2010 it’s the legendary Ona Watson with a rare musical appearance.

The much anticipated Gucci Mane concert has been postponed until November 21st but all tickets for the October 30th concert will be honored according to the post on Facebook by event promoter, Walter Conwell:

“This week a judge denied Gucci Mane the privilege of leaving the state of GA to honor his obligation in Birmingham. the show has been postponed to Nov.21st with Nick Minaj and ALL TICKETS WILL BE HONORED. I DEEPLY APOLOGIZE TO ALL DISAPPOINTED FANS BUT AS A PROMOTER ALL I CAN DO I PAY THE ARTIST, I CAN NOT CONTROL THE DECISIONS THEY MAKE IN THEIR PERSONAL LIVES.”

Additionally, the promoters have decided that the party must go on – offering a FREE party to all starting at 9pm at Club Continental tonight, October 30th.
