BIRMINGHAM HUSBAND AND WIFE MIX MAKE-UP AND MARRIAGE FOR THE PERFECT BLEND

Birmingham, AL–Not your average husband and wife team, Darrius and Meagan Peace are taking the business of make-up to beautiful new heights. Launched in 2007, after years of research, the Birmingham-based couple’s Hayah Mineral Cosmetics line carries a roster of representatives nationwide who sell the products specifically designed for women of color.
Developed after multiple failed attempts to find a suitable cosmetic line that “worked” for the diverse spectrum of African American complexions, the Peace family researched and developed a deep, rich line of foundations, lip shades, eye shadows and more made from naturally occurring minerals. All of this was successfully done while rearing three young children under the age of three.
Co-founder Darrius Peace says Hayah is a family business that is not just about cosmetics. It’s about confidence. “Hayah means ‘Iam’. So each time a woman wears our products she can say ‘I am Sensational’ or ‘I am Beautiful’, which are the names of two of our popular products,” said Darrius.
Hayah Mineral Cosmetics
is sold online at www.hayahcosmetics.com and through national consultants. The Peaces say they are gearing up for expansion in other cities across the country and that the success in Birmingham and surrounding areas is only the beginning. “Meagan and I are driven, not only in our goal to continue to thrive in business, but more importantly in our quest to help each woman know how uniquely special she is,” said Darrius. For more information on Darrius and Meagan Peace or Hayah Mineral Cosmetics contact Meagan Peace at mpeace@hayahcosmetics.com or call 1-877-81-hayah (42924).

Showplace home in West End combines old with new
A home for sale at 3017 Wenonah Circle in Birmingham’s West End is worthy of any television makeover show.
The one-owner, 1968 red brick rancher with white trim still maintains its mid-century era’s best assets, including original hardwood floors and mature trees. However, extensive remodeling has resulted in an updated neighborhood showplace.

Hazing Draws Focus on Initiation Process: On HOT1077 Radio

When most people hear the term “hazing” it conjures up images of fraternities. In reality, hazing occurs in many arenas including fraternities and sororities, the military, athletic teams and student organizations (like marching bands) at both the high school and collegiate levels. Many believe that hazing in fraternities and in general is nothing more than silly antics and harmless pranks like those remembered from the 1980s hit comedy Animal House. The realities of hazing are dramatically different than the humorous images many people associate with the term. Hazing is an abuse of power that can have debilitating and life-threatening consequences.
One of the most commonly asked questions about hazing in fraternities is why do young men and women participate in such horrific and life-threatening activities just to belong to a group? This seems like a reasonable question–but it reveals the lack of understanding about the dynamics of the hazing process. For example, many states that have passed legislation to prohibit hazing have recognized that the intensity of the peer pressure prevents hazing victims from providing true consent to participate in the activities in question. Additionally, many prospective members don’t realize and are not informed of what the pledging process and hazing will entail because this information is shrouded in secrecy by the brotherhood. This, combined with the increasing severity of the hazing over the weeks and months of the pledging process places the pledge in a very vulnerable position and hence, more susceptible to victimization. Compounding these dynamics in fraternities and other male groups is the desire for the pledge or prospective member to “be tough,” “stick it out” etc. and prove his masculinity rather than risk being identified as a wimp or sissy.
In one of the boldest moves by any greek letter organization to date, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporate has announced that it is putting a halt to new membership nation-wide. Herman “Skip” Mason Jr., the president of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., has suspended all new membership intake until further notice.
Mason said the decision was made in response to several hazing incidents on college campuses throughout the country including at Fort Valley State University in Georgia where an Alpha brother is charged with felony aggravated battery for allegedly injuring a pledgee to the point of hospitalization.
Sororities are not immune to hazing. At Rutgers University, a young pledge said she was told by the women of Sigma Gamma Rho, that beatings would “humble” her, that each flesh-rending strike with a wooden paddle would build love and trust between sorority sisters.
For seven nights the beatings went on, she said. In all, she was struck 201 times. On the eighth day — unable to sit, her buttocks covered with blood clots and welts — she went to the hospital. Then she reported it to the university.
Let’s be honest: most of you who went to college saw friends who were hazed and might have even been hazed yourself, and while, Greek life presents many advantages, including some commitment to community service, as well as professional networking opportunities…the big question is, have the disadvantages and risks, become too much of a price to pay?
That is one of the many questions we will tackle Sunday at noon on HOT 1077’s New Talk Show, “In Focus.” Tune in, Sunday at noon, on Hot1077 or log on line to listen www.hot1077radio.com
