This is It Reviews Respectable, but Irrelevant

No This Is It review really matters, as This Is It reviews are entirely useless. Michael Jackson This Is It reviews look to be respectable, nonetheless. No This Is It review had been posted until today, which is usually the kiss of death for movies. But Michael Jackson’s This Is It is not just any movie. And no matter what This Is It reviews say, the “final” look at Michael Jackson is about to be a massive phenomenon.

As anyone alive knows, the Michael Jackson This Is It tour was supposed to be the King of Pop’s last series of shows. It was his last show, but not for the reasons anyone expected. With Jackson’s death, This Is It looked to be dead as well, until director Kenny Ortega and company decided to turn the This Is It rehearsals into a documentary film. Read more…

icecubeNumber One with a Bullet:

Synopsis: Number One With A Bullet examines the prevalence of violence in rap and hip-hop and the impact that such has had on an industry and a culture. From corporate music offices to urban city streets, the documentary spans the United States to investigate the phenomenon of gun violence in America and its strong influence on urban music. The film attempts to strip apart the connections between violence and the rap/hip-hop genre and look at each individually in order to truly understand the relationship. The documentary features an impressive array of rap and hip-hop artists who have survived violent incidents. Included are interviews with Young Buck, B Real, Obie Trice, Prodigy, Mos Def, KRS ONE, Ice Cube and 50 Cent. Police officers, educators, doctors, community activists and fans also weigh in on the effects of gun violence and the influence that such destructiveness has on music and that music has on violence. Specifically Number One With A Bullet follows five rappers with experience on both sides of the issue; Young Buck, B Real, Obie Trice, 40 Glocc and Alabama’s own The Last Mr. Bigg AKA Diamond Eye. The documentary follows the musicians back to the locations of their run in with violent crime and provides an insiders view of the less than flashy side of the story. The interviews featured in the film would be interesting on their own, but being framed with the larger context makes them all together more compelling. Number One With A Bullet is an extremely slick documentary that displays the work of an obviously seasoned cinematographer (specifically Jeff Bollman) and sharp director (Jim Dziura). Perhaps being a bit self-reflexive, the documentary, overall, makes a very tough and gritty topic aesthetically pleasing to take in.  Join Urbanham.com as we watch this movie with a few of our friends!

Sidewalk Film Festival to show hip-hop documentary which looks at the struggle of female lyricist in the music business.

saymynamex4251Hip hop began a new and edgy form of New York street culture in the late 1970s and has since become one of the most pervasive creative phenomena of our times, informing music, fashion, art and nearly every facet of popular culture. But while hip hop is often seen as a democratic medium where anyone who can turn a rhyme or create a beat has a shot at the spotlight, women are still fighting for their fair share of success, despite the track record of such iconic artists as Queen Latifah, Salt-n-Pepa, MC Lyte and Missy Elliott. While female rappers struggle to be heard, they also deal with a music industry that often promotes sexist and misogynist MC’s over artists with a positive message and frequently prefers women who are willing to be sex symbols rather than role models. Filmmaker Nirit Peled takes an inside look at the world of women in hip hop in the documentary Say My Name, which examines both the obstacles and the accomplishments of women in the male-dominated world of music. Say My Name includes exclusive interviews with Roxanne Shante, Monie Love, Remy Ma, Rha Digga, Eryka Badu and many more. Say My Name was an official selection at the 2009 South by Southwest Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide.
