Real Men Read: Literacy, Legacy and Leadership Return to Miles College for 16th Annual Event
On March 5th from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., the 16th Annual Real Men Read event will once again bring powerful purpose and positive representation to the Knox-Windham Gymnasium at Miles College in Fairfield, Alabama.
Hosted by I See Me, Inc., the long-running literacy initiative continues its mission of encouraging young boys to see reading not just as a school assignment — but as a gateway to legacy.
This year’s theme, “Legacy Starts with Literacy,” reinforces a message that has remained consistent for more than a decade: strong readers become strong leaders.
A Focus on Young Male Students
The event is specifically designed for male students in grades 3–5 — a critical developmental stage when reading proficiency can shape academic confidence and long-term success.
By surrounding these students with accomplished men from various professional backgrounds, Real Men Read does something powerful:
It normalizes literacy.
It elevates it.
And it connects it to manhood, mentorship, and opportunity.
When young boys see men reading, leading discussions, and investing in their growth, it reshapes the narrative around education and identity.

A “Hands On” Birmingham Story
In a city rich with civil rights history and educational progress, literacy remains one of the most important economic drivers for long-term community advancement.
Events like Real Men Read are more than feel-good gatherings — they are pipeline-building moments.
They:
- Reinforce early literacy skills
- Provide positive male role models
- Strengthen school-to-community partnerships
- Support long-term academic outcomes
Hosted at Miles College, one of Alabama’s historic HBCUs, the setting itself carries cultural weight. It reminds students that higher education is not abstract — it’s accessible.
Community Support
This year’s event is supported by several community partners, including:
- Miles College
- Birmingham City Council
- Education Plus
- And other local organizations committed to youth empowerment
The Real Men Read initiative by I See Me, Inc., along with the ongoing community efforts of Birmingham City Schools and the City of Birmingham, reflects a shared belief that literacy and mentorship must remain community priorities.
Other annual campaigns from I See Me, Inc. include the annual I See Me, Inc. Literacy Summit (May 2026) and the I See Me, Inc. First Libraries Book Giveaway held each December.
