From The Outside Looking In: A Night of Unity with the Black Contractors Association – Alabama Chapter Honoring Frankie Beverly

On Saturday, September 20th, the Black Contractors Association Alabama Chapter hosted an unforgettable evening at the Tuxedo Ballroom in Ensley — the We Are One Tribute. The event brought together music, history, and recognition, celebrating not only the spirit of Frankie Beverly’s timeless influence but also the excellence and resilience of Alabama’s construction and carpentry community.
A White-Hot Atmosphere
The all-white attire set the tone for a night of elegance and unity, paying homage to Frankie Beverly’s iconic signature look. Guests filled the ballroom in a sea of white, creating an atmosphere that was both stylish and symbolic of togetherness.

Setting the Stage with Energy and Style
The evening was guided by dynamic hosts Deno Posey and Ms. V, who kept the program flowing with energy, warmth, and humor. Their presence created a welcoming atmosphere that connected the audience to the heart of the celebration. Adding to the vibe, DJ Chocolate set the tone before the show and kept the momentum alive afterward, spinning a soundtrack that perfectly matched the evening’s theme of unity and tribute.
A Tribute Through Music and Flavor
Entertainment came alive with Yung Vokalz and The Movement, electrifying the stage with soulful sounds. The evening’s special guest, Jubu Smith, a longtime tour musician with Maze featuring Frankie Beverly, added an authentic touch of musical history.
Even the food carried meaning — themed stations celebrated Frankie Beverly’s journey across cities that shaped his music and life: Los Angeles, New Orleans, and Birmingham. Each flavor told a story, connecting culture to the rhythm of the night.

Honoring Builders and Trailblazers
The highlight of the evening was the presentation of the James Poindexter Spirit of Excellence Award, recognizing leaders in construction and carpentry whose work continues to strengthen Alabama’s communities.
The award carries deep meaning — Mr. James Poindexter, who was present at the event, is a living pillar of history. As superintendent of the 16th Street Baptist Church reconstruction after the bombing, his hands helped restore a sacred site of resilience and hope. His legacy continues to inspire a new generation of builders and community leaders.

Honoring Excellence in the Trades
One of the most powerful moments of the evening was the presentation of the James Poindexter Spirit of Excellence Award, which recognized four trailblazers whose work, mentorship, and dedication have left a lasting mark on Alabama’s construction community. Ernest Jackson, a master carpenter and longtime instructor at Lawson State, was honored for decades of training and inspiring new generations of tradesmen. Herman Alexander, founder of Alexander Construction, was recognized for his meticulous craftsmanship, mentorship, and impact on both residential and commercial building across the state. Terence Burts, founder of Burts Cabinetry, was celebrated for transforming his passion into a thriving business while uplifting apprentices and future craftsmen. Harold Coleman, a master of commercial construction, was honored for more than 50 years of leadership, mentorship, and service on major projects that have shaped Birmingham and beyond. Together, these honorees embody the spirit of perseverance, excellence, and community that the award represents.
More Than a Celebration
The We Are One Tribute was more than a night of music and awards — it was a reminder of how culture, history, and community intersect. It showcased how the Black Contractors Association is not only honoring the past but also laying the foundation for the future, building with excellence and pride.
The evening was further elevated by powerful acknowledgments from leaders who stand firmly behind the mission of the Black Contractors Association of Alabama. Representative Jasmine Crockett praised the Association’s efforts as a bold reminder that true leadership is measured by courage, conviction, and service to community, emphasizing the importance of giving Black contractors a platform for growth and opportunity. Commissioner Lashunda Scales affirmed her deep commitment to ensuring fairness and equity in Jefferson County, pledging to continue working so that Black contractors always have a seat at the table when county projects and opportunities are considered. Dr. George C. Fraser, renowned author and global networking leader, reflected on his lifelong mission to uplift and empower Black professionals, reminding attendees that unity, shared struggle, and collective progress remain the foundation of generational wealth and opportunity. Their words of encouragement underscored the lasting impact and national significance of the evening’s celebration. The National Black Contractors Association President, Abdur-Rahim Hameed, was also in attendance.
A Team Effort Worth Celebrating

Behind the scenes, the success of the We Are One Tribute was made possible by a dedicated planning team whose vision and hard work brought the evening to life. Led by Visionary Jarrod Sims of the Black Contractors Association Alabama Chapter, the team blended creativity, coordination, and professionalism to ensure every detail reflected the spirit of excellence. From sales and coordination by Donnie Hatcher, to web, graphics, and media by Kalpa Nuwan, to video, graphics, and DJ support by Phaith Frazier and Russ McClinton of Eventful Media Group, Inc., each contribution added to the seamless flow of the evening. Erica Pettway guided PR, talent, and production, while Janet Maycock and the Ensley Entertainment District ensured top-notch venue and hospitality. CJay Smith powered the sound, lights, and stage, and Belinda Lyons of Pro Inked Professional Printing Services brought the printed elements to life. Their collective efforts in planning along with the day of show staff created an unforgettable experience that honored legacy, unity, and excellence.
Closing Thought: From the outside looking in, this event wasn’t just a tribute to Frankie Beverly’s timeless style and sound — it was a tribute to the power of unity, legacy, and the hands that build both our cities and our communities.
