Young Entrepreneurs Round Table Inspires the Next Generation at Bistro on 19th
Bistro on 19th in Bessemer recently served as more than just a restaurant and event venue — it became a classroom, a gathering space, and a source of inspiration during a Young Entrepreneurs Round Table hosted by Mara Ruffin Blackmon.
A self-described serial entrepreneur, Mrs. Blackmon continues to exemplify what it means to lead through service. While many know her as the owner of Bistro on 19th, her impact extends far beyond the walls of her business. From supporting students and community members to working alongside community leaders and elected officials to help feed and serve the public, her commitment to giving back has come full circle.

That same spirit of service was on full display as she welcomed students from DECA, a national organization that prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality, and management. DECA is not an acronym for a single phrase, but rather a framework that helps students apply real-world business knowledge, develop essential life skills, and prepare for long-term success.
The students were accompanied by Latasha Nix, Career Coach with Jefferson County Schools, and Cameron Robinson, Business and Education Teacher at Minor High School, both of whom play a vital role in shaping the next generation of business leaders.
During the round table, Mrs. Blackmon spoke candidly about her entrepreneurial journey — including her failures, successes, and the resilience required to build businesses that last. Her honesty resonated deeply with the students, offering lessons that extended far beyond textbooks and theory.
True to form, hospitality remained at the heart of the experience. Mrs. Blackmon personally served the students brunch and sent each of them off with parting gifts, reinforcing the idea that leadership, generosity, and excellence can coexist.

Her ongoing commitment to the community is also reflected through Senior Circle, a special weekly gathering hosted at Bistro on 19th for Jefferson County’s senior population, further demonstrating how her business serves as a hub for connection across generations.
The Young Entrepreneurs Round Table was a powerful reminder that when business, mentorship, and service intersect, the result is meaningful impact — and a clearer path forward for those preparing to lead tomorrow.
