2026 A.G. Gaston Conference: Honoring Legacy & Empowering Black Enterprise in Birmingham
Each year in Birmingham, Alabama, one of the most meaningful gatherings for Black business owners, entrepreneurs, and community leaders takes place — the A.G. Gaston Conference. Now in its third decade, this annual conference continues to honor the legacy of Arthur George (A.G.) Gaston, one of the most influential Black entrepreneurs in American history, and to empower current and future generations of business leaders with insight, opportunity, and connection.
A Legacy of Black Economic Power
Born in Demopolis, Alabama, in 1892, A.G. Gaston overcame enormous racial barriers to build a business empire that included insurance companies, a bank, a construction company, funeral services, and the iconic A.G. Gaston Motel — a crucial hub during the Civil Rights Movement. Gaston’s philosophy — finding a need and filling it in ways that build community and economic strength — remains a powerful blueprint for aspiring entrepreneurs today.
The A.G. Gaston Conference was created in 2004 by Bob Dickerson Jr. and Gaynelle Adams Jackson to celebrate that story and carry his mission forward. From its beginnings as a local expo to its growth into a nationally recognized summit, the conference has served as a platform where business owners, corporate leaders, and civic stakeholders come together to learn, connect, and advance economic empowerment.
Bob Dickerson has been a leader in the Birmingham community for over four decades, founding the Birmingham Business Resource Center (BBRC) to provide financing, technical assistance, and advocacy for underserved entrepreneurs. Gaynelle Adams Jackson brings decades of experience in event management, program development, and small business support — and as President of the Alabama MicroEnterprise Network (AMEN) she has championed microbusiness development statewide.
Why The Conference Matters
Held annually in February during Black History Month, the A.G. Gaston Conference uniquely blends inspiration with practical strategy. It provides workshops, keynote addresses, networking, and opportunities for entrepreneurs at every stage — from startup founders to seasoned business owners. More than just a gathering, it functions as a catalyst for economic growth within Birmingham and beyond.
The focus on “Legacy, Leverage, and Liberation” underscores the conference’s mission: equipping attendees with actionable insight, helping them connect with investors and innovators, and building pathways to generational wealth that strengthen families and communities.
