Throwback Brunch Delivered Midday Vibes to The Toasted Yolk in Birmingham
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Weekday Brunch got a throwback soundtrack on Thursday, August 27, as The Toasted Yolk Café in Birmingham welcomed DJ Chocolate for a special Throwback Brunch, combining good food, daytime energy and some of the songs that have kept generations moving.
From 11 a.m. until 1 p.m., DJ Chocolate provided the soundtrack for the afternoon, spinning a mix of throwback favorites while guests enjoyed brunch and lunch selections from The Toasted Yolk.

The event offered a different take on the traditional weekday lunch in Birmingham. Instead of waiting until the weekend for brunch and entertainment, guests were able to step away from the workday, grab a meal and enjoy music in a relaxed atmosphere.
Good Food Meets Throwback Music
Known for its breakfast, brunch and lunch menu, The Toasted Yolk provided the setting while DJ Chocolate brought the music.

Throughout the two-hour set, familiar throwback tracks helped create an atmosphere that was energetic without losing the laid-back feel of a daytime brunch. Guests could enjoy their meals, catch up with friends and coworkers, and hear songs that brought back plenty of memories. Thanks to the talented bartenders the day even featured a couple of specialty cocktails inspired by DJ Chocolate’s name.
The concept also demonstrates how Birmingham restaurants can create experiences that go beyond what’s on the menu. Pairing food with live entertainment gives customers another reason to visit while providing something different for people looking for daytime activities around the city.
For DJ Chocolate, the Throwback Brunch was also a return to familiar territory. The former radio personality and veteran mix DJ built a loyal following over the years with her signature throwback mixes, entertaining radio audiences in markets including Birmingham, Huntsville and Boston. Known for blending classic R&B, old-school hip-hop and feel-good favorites from the ’70s, ’80s, ’90s and early 2000s, DJ Chocolate became a familiar part of the workday for listeners who tuned in for music that brought back memories. That same radio-style energy was on display at The Toasted Yolk, as she mixed familiar favorites and provided the soundtrack for an afternoon of good food, music and fun.
A Different Kind of Birmingham Brunch
Birmingham’s brunch scene continues to grow, and events like the Throwback Brunch add another option to the mix.
The August 27 event showed that you don’t necessarily need a Saturday or Sunday — or even a late night — to create a good vibe.
Sometimes all it takes is brunch, a DJ and the right playlist.
While the Throwback Brunch was open to everyone, DJ Chocolate and the leadership team at Toasted Yolk Birmingham also saw the event as an opportunity to introduce a different crowd to the restaurant during the weekday lunch hours. The concept was designed to appeal to some of the area’s young and active retirees, business owners and entrepreneurs, shift workers with nontraditional schedules, travelers visiting Birmingham, and professionals with the flexibility to enjoy an extended lunch. The Toasted Yolk’s downtown location already makes it a convenient destination for UAB employees and downtown workers, while Birmingham’s growing brunch culture helps drive a strong weekend crowd. Events like the Throwback Brunch offer another opportunity to build weekday traffic by giving guests a reason to get out, meet up with friends, enjoy great food and spend a couple of hours listening to the music they love. For DJ Chocolate and The Toasted Yolk team, the goal is to continue exploring ways to turn an ordinary weekday lunch into an experience.
